The Native Plant Society of Northeastern Ohio Awards
Jane McCullam
The Gentian Award for 2019
Every year we designate a person to receive The Gentian Award. This year we are making two separate awards to persons who have made substantial contributions to the Native Plant Society of Northeastern Ohio. One award is granted to Jane McCullam and the second award is granted to Jack and Florence Selby.
Long time Native Plant Society Journal Editor and Membership chair Jane McCullam lost her battle with cancer
on April 25.
She, and good friend and founding president, Ann Malmquist spent
countless hours publishing a quality journal and adding chapters around the state.
Jane was editor from December 2000 until 2009 when she turned it over to the
current editors Diane Christensen and Bill Oberdick, though still proofing articles.
Due to her exceptional computer skills, Jane laid out the yearly program of events
flyer, the annual membership renewal notice, the 30th anniversary booklet and
corrected my one-handed typing. She encouraged me to resume activities with the
Society after I suffered a stroke, often driving me to board meetings and programs. I
dedicated Saturday’s hike on April 27, 2019 with Jim Bissell at Stanton Forest to her.
Jane loved sharing her Newbury property along the Chagrin River with the Society.
She co-led a spring wildflower walk to see the numerous green dragons on the flood
plain in May of 2017.
Jane’s family celebrated her life on Saturday May 4th at her
daughter’s house on the property she loved.
